We understand those who have the, “I can do anything” attitude, but we also understand the importance of having a professional install your new furnace or air conditioner. We’re sure you can do just about anything but trust us when we say, leave the HVAC to us. An improperly installed air conditioner can lead to an increase in your energy bill of up to 30%! It can also void out any type of warranty that may have been on the unit, leaving you with costly repairs.

First, if you end up with an improperly sized unit, you will not be comfortable. Each system is sized specifically to condition a specified amount of space. A larger system does not mean higher efficiency. In that situation, your space would be cooled too quick for the system to have time to pull the humidity out of the air. This will leave you with a cold, clammy, humid home. If the size of your old unit is in question, our comfort consultant will do a load calculation while out at your home to give you an estimate on your new system.

When professional HVAC installers are replacing a system, they are also taking note of and altering any issues involving the duct work. In many cases, ducts become loose over time for various reasons. This causes a loss in air flow. I don’t know anyone who wants to pay extra on their energy bill to condition their attic or crawl space. Our installers are trained to eliminate such issues.

An improperly installed system can cause the system to fail prematurely. By replacing your own air conditioner, you could also be harming the environment. Depending on the age of your system, it may contain a harmful gas referred to as R-22, which is being phased out by the EPA. Our installers have recovery machines that hold that gas. If you were to replace your system and didn’t have this machine, you’d likely be releasing it into our atmosphere. This is a huge problem. Every bit of R-22 released aids in the growth of the holes in our zone layer.

Curious as to what you’d save if you did replace that old air conditioner? The average American spends about $1,300 per year in operating costs for their heat and air. If you are looking to decrease that number, you should pay close attention to the SEER rating of the new air conditioner you’re looking to purchase.

In short, the higher the SEER rating the better. You can save anywhere between about 20 and 40% on your bill by upgrading. Basically, the older the system and the higher SEER rating you upgrade to, the more savings you’ll see. When our comfort consultant comes out to your home to give you an estimate on upgrade, be sure to make him aware that you want to save as much as possible and he will show you some great options byAmerican Standard or any other brand you’d prefer.

Air loss through your duct system is also a factor that directly affects your operating costs. Sometimes ducts can become disconnected, tape can wear out, animals can cause destruction and many other variables leading to this issue.  Our team will inspect your ducts to ensure this isn’t the case for you.

The air quality within your home is extremely important and probably a lot worse than you may realize. According to the EPA, “Indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 2-5 times, and occasionally, more than 100 times higher than outdoor levels.” That’s definitely not the best news, especially for those of us who live in and around Atlanta.

Added pollution within your home comes from building materials used to construct your home, household cleaners, pesticides, mold, pollen and the list just goes on and on. These are factors that directly relate to your health. If you are within a space that has high air pollution, you are breathing in all of that daily. There’s only so much our bodies can do to get rid of these toxins. Issues can show up in many different forms, the most common being respiratory problems.

Due to these issues, we recommend changing your filter out regularly, having bi-yearly duct cleanings and having an air cleaner installed on your HVAC system.

There are many different variables that cause extreme hot spots and extreme cold spots within your home. It may just be that the sun hits a specific room most of the day. Either way, since zone systems were introduced into the HVAC world, that’s no longer an issue. Dampers are installed within your duct work strategically to shift the flow of air. From your thermostat, you can shut air on or off to each individual area referred to as zones.

American Standard has brought Acculink™ Zoning system to life. This system allows you to control the zones from any web enabled device. It even allows you to control the temperature for each specific zone.

This is incredible….especially considering where this idea originated from. Before there were zone systems, dampers existed but were not automatic or connected to your thermostat. If you wanted to shift the flow of air, you had to get in the attic or crawl space and shift the damper manually!

If your air conditioner stops cooling, chances are you’ll soon have an HVAC technician at your home diagnosing the problem. We’ve put together a guide to help you navigate through the repair process with a better understanding of few terms you’ll likely hear.

Condenser Coil – Located outside and pushes heat out. This component holds refrigerant.

Evaporator Coil – Located indoors and absorbs heat. Also holds refrigerant.

Two Stage Cooling – An automatically adjusting component. It can operate at two speeds: high and low.  Which speed it runs on is based upon how hot it is outside.

Zones or Zoning – Created to increase comfort through the home and to help eliminate extreme hot or extreme cold rooms. Zones are controlled from your thermostat. Each zone controls a set of vents. Within the vents are dampers which change the direction of air flow.

Duct Work – Tubes that carry conditioned air to the rooms within a space.

Variable Speed – This refers the motor on the indoor unit that adjusts based upon what the thermostat is calling for and what the home requires.

Refrigerant – This is the gas that cools the air within your home through the coils. There are two main types: R-22, which is being phased out by the EPA  and R-410A, which is the more environmentally friends replacement of R-22.

Compressor – The heart of your air conditioner. It converts refrigerant from a low pressure gas to a high pressure gas.

Float Switch – This is a sensor usually attached to the drain pan on your furnace. If water reaches a certain height, the sensor will shut the system off automatically so that you don’t end up with water damage within your home.

Condensate Drain – Your evaporator coil creates condensation. This water leaves your home via the condensate drain, which leads all the way outside. These can clog from time to time and need to be cleared.
