When your system is low on refrigerant, you will notice that your home feels a bit warmer than normal and is not as comfortable as it use to be. This is because refrigerant is the gas that’s responsible for making your home cooler. Basically, without freon, your system wouldn’t be doing much of anything.

1. Vents are blowing lukewarm air.

This is because the gas is like a heat sponge. It removes the heat from the air and lower the temperature of the outgoing air.

2. Your thermostat either never reaches the set temperature or it takes an usually extensive amount of time to reach set temperature.

This goes back to the gas being a heat sponge. Freon leaking out = smaller heat sponge.

3. Electric bills have been higher.

This is caused by the air conditioner having to run for longer amounts of time to get to what the thermostat is requesting.

4. Ice has built up on the coils and or refrigerant line (copper pipe).

Low refrigerant causes the indoor coil to get incredibly cold. Once this happens, the indoor coil serves the refrigerant line incredibly cold liquid refrigerant.

5. You hear a hissing sound at your outdoor unit.

This is because the only way your system is low on refrigerant is if there is a leak. You will only hear hissing if it’s a REALLY bad leak. It could be a tiny pinhole leak in which case you probably wouldn’t hear anything.

If you do hear this hissing noise, turn your air conditioner off at the thermostat. Turn the fan from “auto” to “on”. Then call 770-672-6963 to have a certified HVAC technician out to your home. Let them know you have the coupon below.

Refrigerant leaks shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially if you have an older system that takes R-22. This is the gas that was once used before they found out it was causing major issues with our ozone layer when released into the atmosphere. Read more about that here.

When getting quotes for a new HVAC system, be mindful of the brand. There are brands known to have more breakdowns, repairs and premature failure. American Standard is not one of those brands. They are a leader in the industry! The equipment they deliver is dependable.

There are many different variables that contribute to energy efficiency. As long as the system is installed properly, American Standard Platinum ZV can reach a SEER rating of up to 21! This respectable rating can thank AccuComfort technology which causes the compressor to adjust in small increments. Old compressors had to modes: on and off. Modern day compressor typically run on high or low. This specific compressor can adjust as little as 1% if that’s what is most efficient for the indoor temperature the system is trying to reach. It’s as though the compressor is taking little sips rather than giant gulps. This can save you a ton of money!

This system is fantastic on sound. Since the system runs constantly (even if only on a very low speed) it eliminates the loud noise from it cutting on and off. Any noise the unit does create is stopped by sound insulation located inside the system. This unit is also designed to be less susceptible to cracks and corrosion. The new design protects the coils with louvered steel panels.

Below is from Consumer Reports. They show that American Standard requires fewer repairs than most brands out there. Even if it’s a little more of an upfront cost, it’s worth it to not have to deal with costly repairs when it’s 95°+ outside.

By adding weatherstripping to your doors, you are helping to eliminate air loss. Every little bit adds up! When you rid your home of air leaks, your energy bill will decrease. Follow the steps below to replace weatherstripping.

  1. Carefully cut the old, worn out weatherstripping if it exists and pry it off. Use a utility knife to cut away the old and use a painters tool or flat head screw driver to pry.
  2. Cut new aluminum weatherstripping to fit under door properly.
  3. Sand the door jam smooth with 100 grit sand paper.
  4. Line the weatherstripping up where you plan to install it and mark where the screws will go. Remove weatherstripping and drill pilot holes where screws are to go.
  5. Put weatherstripping back in place and screw in.
  6. Place foam weatherstripping on sides of door jamb and head jamb.

Congratulations! You have helped to make your home a bit more efficient. Keep up the good work. This is one of the few things we recommend you do yourself to increase the efficiency of your home. If you have anything going on with your HVAC system, we recommend you call a professional. We’re here to help those in and around the metro Atlanta area. We understand those who have the, “I can do anything” attitude, but we also understand the importance of having a professional install your new furnace or air conditioner. We’re sure you can do just about anything but trust us when we say, leave the HVAC to us. An improperly installed air conditioner can lead to an increase in your energy bill of up to 30%! It can also void out any type of warranty that may have been on the unit, leaving you with costly repairs.

First, if you end up with an improperly sized unit, you will not be comfortable. Each system is sized specifically to condition a specified amount of space. A larger system does not mean higher efficiency. In that situation, your space would be cooled too quick for the system to have time to pull the humidity out of the air. This will leave you with a cold, clammy, humid home. If the size of your old unit is in question, our comfort consultant will do a load calculation while out at your home to give you an estimate on your new system.

When professional HVAC installers are replacing a system, they are also taking note of and altering any issues involving the duct work. In many cases, ducts become loose over time for various reasons. This causes a loss in air flow. I don’t know anyone who wants to pay extra on their energy bill to condition their attic or crawl space. Our installers are trained to eliminate such issues.

An improperly installed system can cause the system to fail prematurely. By replacing your own air conditioner, you could also be harming the environment. Depending on the age of your system, it may contain a harmful gas referred to as R-22, which is being phased out by the EPA. Our installers have recovery machines that hold that gas. If you were to replace your system and didn’t have this machine, you’d likely be releasing it into our atmosphere. This is a huge problem. Every bit of R-22 released aids in the growth of the holes in our zone layer.
