When your system is low on refrigerant, you will notice that your home feels a bit warmer than normal and is not as comfortable as it use to be. This is because refrigerant is the gas that’s responsible for making your home cooler. Basically, without freon, your system wouldn’t be doing much of anything.
1. Vents are blowing lukewarm air. This is because the gas is like a heat sponge. It removes the heat from the air and lower the temperature of the outgoing air.
2. Your thermostat either never reaches the set temperature or it takes an usually extensive amount of time to reach set temperature.
This goes back to the gas being a heat sponge. Freon leaking out = smaller heat sponge.
3. Electric bills have been higher.
This is caused by the air conditioner having to run for longer amounts of time to get to what the thermostat is requesting.
4. Ice has built up on the coils and or refrigerant line (copper pipe).
Low refrigerant causes the indoor coil to get incredibly cold. Once this happens, the indoor coil serves the refrigerant line incredibly cold liquid refrigerant.
5. You hear a hissing sound at your outdoor unit.
This is because the only way your system is low on refrigerant is if there is a leak. You will only hear hissing if it’s a REALLY bad leak. It could be a tiny pinhole leak in which case you probably wouldn’t hear anything.
If you do hear this hissing noise, turn your air conditioner off at the thermostat. Turn the fan from “auto” to “on”. Then call 770-672-6963 to have a certified HVAC technician out to your home. Let them know you have the coupon below.
Refrigerant leaks shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially if you have an older system that takes R-22. This is the gas that was once used before they found out it was causing major issues with our ozone layer when released into the atmosphere. Read more about that here.
