Heat pumps and air conditioners have advantages and disadvantages. Not every application is interchangeable so be sure to have a certified HVAC company out to help you on your decision.
In the cooling mode, heat pumps and air conditioners are essentially the same. The units pull heat from the inside and push it outside. During the summer, cooling costs are about the same. In the heating mode, the air conditioner does nothing. The heat pump will reverse it’s operation from summer mode and heat your home. They are more environmentally friendly than air conditioners. The only big disadvantage is that when cold temperatures reach extremes, your heat pump coils will freeze up causing the unit to shut off and run in emergency heat till the coils are thawed.
