There are a number of things that could cause your furnace to blow cool air. Here are a few things to check for before you contact your local HVAC professional.
Check your thermostat.
Make sure you have your fan set to “auto” rather than “on.” If you have it set to “on,” even when the heat isn’t on, the fan will still blow and cause you to feel cooler air coming out of your vents.
Check/Change your air filter.
If your air filter looks dirty, change it! If it is dirty enough, it can restrict air flow and cause your furnace to overheat. If this happens, there are safety controls in place to shut off the burners.
If those two things check out, you need an HVAC professional to inspect your system. If you are in the Atlanta Metro Area, contact Accutemp at 770-672-6963.
Here is a list of possible issues a technician may find when your furnace is blowing cool air:
- Ignition Problem
- Insufficient Gas Supply – your gas could be off or the gas line may not be allowing enough gas to get to your furnace
- Damaged Ducts – large holes in your duct work can allow cool air from your attic, crawl space etc to enter your home
- Condensate Line Obstruction – higher efficient furnaces have condensate lines, sometimes those lines become clogged which triggers a safety switch to shut off your furnace
