If it’s exceptionally cold outside, your furnace may have to run for a long while to meet and maintain the set temperature. If that’s not the case and your furnace still won’t shut off, we recommend you check a few things before having a certified HVAC technician out to inspect your system.
First, is your thermostat set to “heat”? Is your fan set to “on” or “auto”? What temperature do you have your thermostat set to? Is that the temperature in the house?
If the programmed temperature is lower than the temperature you have it set to, your furnace is just trying to reach the requested temperature. If it’s extremely cold outside and you have asked your system to maintain 80 degrees within your home, you have simply made an unrealistic request. If that’s not the case, the next thing you need to check is your air filter. In the event that it’s exceptionally dirty, change it. Dirty filters restrict the movement of air through the system. Let’s say all that checks out, you may have a duct issue. At this point, you will need a certified HVAC technician to examine your system for further issues.
If the temperature in your house is higher than the temperature you have requested on your thermostat, your system may not be receiving the information that the desired temperature has been met. Go to your registers and feel the air coming out. If it is cool, go to your thermostat. It’s likely that your fan is set to “on” instead of “auto.” This would cause your fan to continually run. Just switch it to “auto” and it should go back to turning on and off normally. If that doesn’t work, you may have a defective limit switch. In that case, you will need to call an HVAC company to assist you.
