First, does the company have the proper license to work on HVAC equipment? Here in Georgia there are two levels of conditioned air contractor licenses. Requirements are as follows:

Class 1 Restricted License

  • Minimum of 4 years experience
    • 2 years as a lead installer
    • 1 year as a service supervisor {which must include an EPA license}
    • 1 year of residential supervisory experience
    • Board approved heat loss and gain and duct design

Class 2 Unrestricted License

  • Minimum of 5 years experience
    • 2 years of installation as lead with 1 of the years being commercial only
    • 1 year as a service supervisor {which must include an EPA license}
    • 2 years of commercial supervisory experience
    • Board approved heat loss and gain and duct design course
  • Documented experience with installations of conditioned air systems, which exceeds 175,000 BTU (net) of heating and 60,000 BTU of cooling

Important Company Information

  • How many years has the company been in business?
  • Do they have the proper license to be working on HVAC equipment?
  • Do they have general liability insurance?
  • Are their technicians certified to handle refrigerant gas?
  • Member of national trade association?
  • Do they have a non-resident place of business?
  • Can they provide you with referrals?
  • Do their technicians arrive in uniform?
  • Do they respond within 24 hours?

If a contractor gives you a firm price on repairs or replacement without looking at your system first, be weary. A reputable company will only give you a solid price AFTER diagnosing your equipment. The reason for this is that there are many variables involved when pricing out repairs or replacement. You could have an extremely easy application which would drive costs down or you may have an extremely complicated application which would cause repair time to increase thus making for a more expensive repair.
