Quality window and door insulation is very important when it comes to keeping your home warm during the winter. Proper insulation helps to stop cold outdoor air from seeping in through the gaps of the window frame.
To find out where your problem areas are, turn off your HVAC system completely on a windy day. Make sure all doors and windows are closed. Light an incense stick and walk around your home. If you notice smoke being sucked in our blown out, you’ve successfully located a leak.
In order to resolve the air leaks around your doors and windows, caulk between the frame and rough opening. Apply weatherstripping where the sash and glass meet. The diagram below illustrates where air is able to get and out on a window.
If you don’t feel like dealing with caulk, weatherstripping or simply want to have an extra layer of protection from air leaks, add quality thermal curtains. You can also add doorway curtains to glass doors. During the day, pull your curtain to the side. At night, pull the curtain shut to provide another layer of warmth.
Another great option is window film. Apply the product directly to your windows and glass doors. Some window film even helps to protect you from harmful UV rays. If you want to get fancy, you can even get tinted or reflective window film for an added layer of privacy.
